Thrush (Candida) - Symptoms, Causes, Cure and Prevention

Fungal vaginal infections are most often caused by yeast fungi of the genus Candida (Candida albicans), so the scientific name of the disease is vaginal candidiasis.

Itching in the vagina may result from vaginal infection (typically fungal), cystitis or rash (typically called hypersensitive to toiletries or synthetic underwear).Fungal vaginal infections (vaginal candidiasis) are caused by yeast fungi of the genus Candida (Candida albicans), this disease is also called thrush.

Causes of Thrush (Candida)

Usually, a normal vaginal flora holds Candida excessive breeding. However, sometimes the body having conditions favorable for the prosperity, growth, and reproduction of these microorganisms. Such favorable conditions are: 
  • antibiotics (they detrimental effect on healthy microflora, and therefore weaken the protection of the organism); 
  • premenstrual changes in acid-base balance in the environment in the vagina; 
  • hot and humid weather; 
  • the use of vaginal deodorants, bath salts and some kinds of soap; 
  • intercourse with the dry vagina (vaginal mucosa is irritated and thus its protection is weakened); 
  • the use of tampons.

Symptoms of Thrush (Candida)

Women suffering from thrush, complain of irritation and a burning sensation in the vagina, as well as profuse discharge that looks like cottage cheese.

What you can do

You can reduce the appearance of Candida and prevent their re-occurrence of the following methods: Do not wear tight synthetic underwear and tights, do not use vaginal deodorants, shower gels, bath foam and salt; during intercourse and insertion of the tampon, use water-based lubricants. 
Use special gels to maintain the acid-alkaline balance in the vagina. With repeated treatment (recurrent) vaginal candidiasis used antifungal agents. They are widely available and sold in pharmacies without a prescription. However, in some women, antifungal creams alone can cause irritation of the vagina.
You should consult your doctor in the following cases:
  • If thrush symptoms manifested you the first time; 
  • if you happen to more than three episodes of candidiasis in the year or you get sick the second time within two months; 
  • if, despite treatment, the symptoms do not disappear; 
  • if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; 
  • if there were symptoms such as pain in the abdomen, chest, and back; 
  • if you are under 12 or over 60 years; 
  • if you are taking medication for diabetes or immunosuppressive remedies.

What can a doctor

The doctor should ascertain diagnosis and therapy, to choose the right products. In some cases, you may need to take antifungal agents inside. Sometimes you may need comprehensive treatment, especially in cases of thrush frequently occurring or in cases where other than candidiasis marked other infectious diseases of the genital tract.
